I had the distinct pleasure this summer of helping a friend outfit a new AR15. His request was pretty simple; he wanted something reliable and easy to use that will be good for shooting short to mid range. My friend was pretty familiar with standard rifles and handguns, but had never handled an AR15 so I wanted to make sure he got the most bang for his buck. There was only one place I could go to make sure he got everything he needed and superb quality.
I called my friend John at Warrior Arms in Valparaiso, Indiana. John is an ex county sheriff’s deputy with a long list of credentials. His biggest credential? The county sheriff’s tactical units ALL carry rifles built by Warrior Arms. If they are good enough for the deputies to rely on when their lives are on the line, they are good enough for me. After a few minutes of discussion John had the order and told me the rifle would be ready to pick up in less than 5 days. Just a note, had I not asked him to order a compensator for it the rifle would have been done the next day.
Here is the rifle, already fitted with Magpul MBUS flip sights but minus the compensator:
Some basics about the rifle:
Barrel – 16″ Chrome Moly Vanadium M4 profile with M4 feed ramps, 1×9 twist and an SB Nitride finish
BCG – Mil-Spec Nitrided 8620 Steel Carrier Assembl, heat treated and plated. Bolt is 9310 steel HPT/MPI tested and the Carrier Key is chrome lined and attached with Grade 8 screws
Rail System – YHM Specter Length Lightweight 4 Rail Free Float Forearm
Upper – Forged 7075 T6 Aluminum, Mil Spec, Hard Coat Anodized, blueprinted prior to assembly
Lower – Forged 7075 T6 Aluminum, Mil Spec, Hard Coat Anodized
Buttstock – Magpul MOE Stock
Length – 35.58″ Fully Extended and 32.25″ Collapsed
On this base we added the following parts:
Precision Arms M4-72 Severe Duty Compensator – This is the best compensator I have found for reducing recoil and staying on target for rapid firing. There are several compensator tests out on YouTube and the majority of them have this beast leading the lists.
Magpul AFG-2 Angled Fore Grip – This is a personal choice piece. Some people prefer the vertical fore grips but the angled fore grip is from Magpul is top of the line.
Magpul MBUS Front and Rear Flip Up Sights – These are a necessity to ensure a broken red dot or a dead battery doesn’t stop you from putting lead on target in times of need.
Vortex Strikefire II Red/Green Dot w/ optional VMX-3T 3x Magnifier – There is just too much to say about this red dot and magnifier setup. I have a full review already prepared, you can read it HERE.
Once we had the rifle together we took it down range for some fun. Sighting in the red dot was simple and getting the backup sights on target was a breeze. The rifle fired smooth and the total weight was low enough for our young sons to fire from standing, unsupported positions. We only put a few hundred rounds through the rifle and we didn’t have any misfeeds, FTEs or jams. As far as first runs with a rifle go, this was picture perfect.
My friend took the rifle home and has since put another thousand rounds through it without a problem. He keeps it cleaned and oiled so I don’t foresee any issues coming up anytime soon. He loves the rifle and his other friends that have fired it all say they are planning to buy as well.
I would like to thank John at Warrior Arms for building such a fantastic rifle for such a great price (call him if you want pricing). If you are in/near the Valparaiso, Indiana area and looking for an AR15, do yourself a favor and contact John. Just a side note, his rifles sometimes show up for resale at other stores and damn near every time the store is asking more than 20% over John’s prices to sell them, used. That’s a pretty nice incentive for shopping at the source.
Note: I don’t have any pictures of the finished rifle that are good enough for posting, but once I get one I’ll throw it up on the review.
