Are we all on our way to becoming boiled frogs?
The metaphor that I’m referring to is the proverbial frog that, when placed in a pot
of cold water that is gradually heated, never realizes that it’s in danger and is
boiled alive. Yes, I know, real frogs will jump out of the pot, my point is the
hypothetical boiled frog is a great metaphor for a very real problem: the mental
game of preparedness.
In 1968, a social psychological study concluded that bystanders of emergency
situations can be very hesitant to act, even at the sight of smoke pouring into the
very room that they are in.
This is mostly due to 2 reasons – A diffusion of responsibility in which individuals
do not feel as much pressure to take action, since the responsibility to take action
is thought to be shared among all of those present. The second reason is the need to
behave correctly and in a socially acceptable way. When other observers fail to
react, individuals often take this as a signal that no response is needed or
appropriate. So when it comes to a potential crisis, we don’t want to take
responsibility or be the one that cried wolf.
We are like the frog in hot water, but it’s up to us to individually make that
jump. Human nature doesn’t like change, but what we fear more is the possibility
that something could actually be happening. We would rather not think about it and
just go on living our lives. But this is how the whole thing works, evil doesn’t
just happen overnight, it’s been a slow boil ever since creation.
In April of 2013, a power grid substation in San Jose, California was severely
damaged by some well-placed rifle shots from only a few men. At the time it was
deemed to be nothing more than vandalism, but almost 10 months later, it was
reclassified by a team of experts as an act of domestic terrorism. This is very
concerning, because a recent government report reveals that the entire grid – from
coast to coast – could be taken down for 18 months or longer by simply taking out as
little as 9 of the 55,000 substations, such as the one that was disabled in only 20
minutes last April. [Source]
And what about the fact that Warren Buffet is dumping US stock at an alarming rate,
along with other billionaires such as George Soros and John Paulson? [Source] And just a few weeks ago there was a fire sale of US
treasuries, leading to the US Federal Reserve’s custody holdings on behalf of
foreign central banks to plunge by $106 billion – this was in one week. [Source]
Now keep in mind, the above events are FACTS (with links to the sources), we are not
talking about speculation. I would also like to talk for a moment about events that
have happened in the past and very well could happen again, many are saying that
they WILL happen again and it’s only a matter of time.
For instance, in 1918, a pandemic flu killed 50 million people world wide. [Source] Do
you think this couldn’t happen again? 80% of San Francisco was destroyed by only a
7.8 earthquake and the resulting fires. [Source] Do you think this couldn’t happen again? Or what about
the solar flare that hit the earth and caused the comparatively basic telegraph
communication systems in Europe and North America to fail. [Source]
Do you think this couldn’t happen again? Do you think that a Chernobyl or
Fukushima like incident couldn’t happen in one of the US’s 100 nuclear
Most of us are bystanders to crisis events and we are looking at each other,
thinking “Should I be prepared for ??? Nah, someone will do something about
it before it gets bad.”
The Buck Stops Here!
Here’s a simple thought process:
1) Is there a potential for you to be affected by a crisis?
(Economic collapse, power grid failure, catastrophic disaster…)
2) What degree of responsibility do you have? (Are you the head of
the household, a business owner, a mother of 4…)
3) What action could you take? (Do nothing and be boiled slowly, or
do something and jump out of the pot)
It’s your choice, you can keep going, ignoring the signs, or you can take action
Here we are, in 2014 and we often forget that the world is crazy, unstable and
ever-changing at a rapidly increasing pace. The fact that the NSA has been
impersonating Facebook so that it could gain access to computers remotely. [Source] Or Ron Paul warning the public of martial law and
economic collapse. [Source] Or that the NSA has total access to the iPhone and most
likely other smartphones. [Source] Or Dick Cheney talking about his fear of an Electro
Magnetic Pulse (EMP) attack on the U.S. [Source]
Michael Sattler, founder and CEO of the SURVIVALKEY explains it this way, “I don’t
fear what’s coming, I fear the people that aren’t prepared for what’s
Most people think about hoarding food, but often forget about hoarding knowledge.
It’s easy to buy bulk food, it’s another thing to have years of time to research
everything that you should know to be prepared. SURVIVALKEY has taken the difficulty
out of being prepared because the information you need in order to be prepared and
survive is organized, printable and stored on your computer so that you can access
it, even without the Internet. Easily download preparedness information from a list
of videos, PDFs, websites, and guides using the SURVIVALKEY downloader. “We are preparing the world, one
download at a time.”
Everyone from the soccer mom to the backwoods survivalist should have this tool!
