Currently in the United States there is this great fear that the government is planning a “Gun Grab”. Basically the theory is that President Barack Obama and the Democrats don’t like gun ownership or the 2nd Amendment and their sole purpose in life at this point is to ensure that no one has any guns. This theory has been compounded since the Aurora theater shooting and the Sandy Hook school shooting.
Looking back I remember this during the presidential campaign period before Obama was elected in 2008. Everyone was so sure the first thing he was going to do when in office was outlaw gun ownership. Four years passed and we heard not a single peep about gun control or confiscation from the White House. As a matter of fact, President Obama scored extremely poorly amongst gun control advocates during his first term.
During the 2012 presidential election cycle this fear was raised once more. This time President Obama had nothing to lose since he will be terming out, so he will be coming for everyone’s guns. Everyone better make sure not to vote for him, he’ll take your guns! During the campaign gun control was only brought up when a violent incident of national significance occurred, namely the shooting of Gabbie Giffords. Immediate reaction was to start talking about gun bans and better controls, once again this was all talk and no action. Guns were safe again.
Now Obama has been elected, and in the very recent past this country has dealt with two very difficult mass tragedies. In each case a single shooter inflicted mass casualties on citizens of this country, even small children, with no regard for human life. In one case the guns were stolen from the perpetrator’s mother after he killed her, and in the other case the perpetrator legally purchased his guns and ammunition. In both cases the events occurred in areas deemed as “gun free zones”, a theater and an elementary school.
As a result of these tragedies people began discussing gun control efforts. This is a natural reaction to a terrible event. As with any political argument surrounding the rights of American citizens we have some on each side and some in the middle. Those on the sides seem to yell a little louder, and generally preach a bit more extreme than those in the middle, again, that’s natural. On the “left” you have those that want to create gun bans and make it harder if not impossible to own certain weapons, and on the “right” you have people that see any ban at all as an infringement upon their rights and an “anti-American” stance. Those in the middle are willing to look at both sides and compromise, but their voices are drowned out by those to the far left and right.
Lately the tactics to garner support for either side have begun getting a bit extreme. This is mainly coming from the “right” side, or the “pro gun” citizens in my opinion. Statements about rebellion, targeted killings, rioting and preparing for open war abound. Primarily however, is the message that the federal government is actively seeking to overturn the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution and confiscate the guns of every American.
This is an absolutely ridiculous statement with no bearing in reality whatsoever. I am pro-gun, but I have to say that statements like this make people look like uninformed conspiracy theorists. I am sure people will respond to this with links to Infowars and Alex Jones and tons of other completely disreputable sites and media mouthpieces. There is a reason these people are saying these things, there is a reason that they want you to think the federal government is coming after your guns.
THE GUN COMPANIES AND AMMUNITION COMPANIES ARE MAKING A FREAKING KILLING OFF OF ALL OF THIS PARANOIA. THEY CANNOT EVEN KEEP UP WITH DEMAND BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE BUYING EVERYTHING THEY CAN IN RESPONSE TO THESE ACCUSATIONS.
What do you think the corporate profits look like right now for companies making AR15 rifles? How about ammunition? How much of an increase in membership has the NRA seen since this all started?
Now, how many bills have been floated in Congress or the Senate to outlaw or confiscate guns? Of the bills floated how many have enough partisan support to be passed? Zero.
We have all become pawns in the continuing search to maximize profit at all costs.
Just as before, weapons bills WILL be passed. And just as before by the time they get enough support to pass they will sound tough but will really be so watered down they will accomplish nothing other than giving some politicians a little face time on the evening news. All the while the executives at the weapons and ammunition companies are dropping money into the NRA’s pockets, who is in turn dropping it straight into the pockets of Republicans and Democrats alike.
Now, for those that TRULY believe Obama is coming for your guns, let’s talk turkey.
There are two ways Obama can come after guns in this country.
National Security Emergency – Some event has occurred that deems private ownership of guns as a direct threat to National Security
Legally – Changing the Constitution and outlawing firearms
Now, people will bring up Hurricane Katrina and how people were getting disarmed during that regional disaster as evidence of number 1, but it is really not a valid point. After Hurricane Katrina there was no immediate move to confiscate guns until people started shooting at police and other first responders, this is according to first responders that I have spoken to that were on the ground in New Orleans. I am sure this can and will be disputed on a case by case basis, but my reasoning will follow shortly.
So, back to how this happens.
In order for private ownership of guns to be deemed a danger to National Security the federal government would have to have significant cause to believe that American citizens are planning to revolt on a massive scale. By the time an event like this reaches this point it is too late to confiscate guns already without declaring Martial Law on a national scale. This has never happened on a scale of this magnitude. Even during the Civil War private ownership of firearms was not threatened. Understand clearly, this means that the threat is IMMINENT, not perceived or considered.
Now, what is an imminent threat of open revolt? Is it people putting up pictures on their Twitter account of Bald Eagles crying and mottoes like “Don’t Tread On Me”? No, in this country these things are allowed by virtue of our Constitution. Is imminent open revolt signaled by people forming online chat groups to talk about how much of a patriot they are compared to everyone else? Is it an imminent threat when people post racist pictures and comments about our President? Maybe an imminent threat is when a Facebook page of “Patriots” reaches 5000 ‘likes’?
No, an imminent threat is something entirely different and I can guarantee you that if that event were to come to pass we would all know about it very quickly. There is a lot of hype coming from a small percentage of this country’s population regarding this issue. It looks like it is a huge groundswell, but in reality there is a LONG way to go before Martial Law and weapon confiscation. We still have freedom of movement and freedom of speech. We still have food on the store shelves and people going to work. The military is still deployed internationally and we are not seeing massive amounts of AWOL soldiers hitting the streets.
Think about it this way….
In order to declare Martial Law and take control of this country the federal government would have to prepare for quite a while. I am not talking about the “FEMA Camps” and the “Massive Ammunition Purchases”, those are delusions and over statements used to incite fear amongst people that are looking for something to scare them. Orders would be sent to various military commanders around the world to prepare them for the coming operations. Units currently deployed around the globe would be recalled to their home bases and put on lockdown. Yes, I know about the rumors of Obama firing military leaders that wont order people to fire at US Citizens but again, this is complete crap. Why is this complete crap? Because it is so sensational that if it were true it would have blown up all over the country and there would be a military coup before the White House could organize a dinner party. I know that goes against the conspiracy theorists here but it is just how things happen.
Secondly, the command and control, the supply chain management, the deployment itself…all of these things take time and the soldiers involved are not stupid, they would see it coming. Do you REALLY believe that tens of thousands of US soldiers are going to blindly and silently prepare for war against their own country? If so you are deranged. Soldiers would be going AWOL at an alarming rate and most of them would be heading directly to the media and local law enforcement. This is not Germany in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Our soldiers are trained to think for themselves and I would anticipate that once word filtered down to them of any such operation the lid would come off immediately.
Now, just for the sake of argument let’s say the military is in bed with the White House and doesn’t warn anyone. What about the Senate? The House? State government? What about all of the citizens that contract with the military and would have to be involved in this buildup, are they all going to keep silent? In order to secure this nation under Martial Law you are looking at probably over 150,000 troops and another 200,000 support personnel…do you REALLY think this can happen without notice?
So this pretty much shows that for the first option to be used a WHOLE lot of things need to happen first. I seriously doubt that it is even possible under this reasoning.
So the other option is that it gets done LEGALLY. Barack Obama changes the Constitution of the United States of America and removes the right to private ownership of firearms and then Congress and the Senate legalize the orderly confiscation of weapons. So how does that one go down?
First there has to be a change to the Constitution stating the private ownership of firearms is no longer legal. This is no easy task. Since I am lazy I am just going to give you the link, but this is the process to amend the Constitution under Article V. – Constitutional Amendments
Important to note is this sentence – “The Congress proposes an amendment in the form of a joint resolution. Since the President does not have a constitutional role in the amendment process, the joint resolution does not go to the White House for signature or approval.”
So first you need two thirds of the House or Senate to propose the change, then you have to get it ratified, which means 38 of the 50 states have to accept it. Do you really see this happening?
This is the ONLY way it happens, folks. If you think the government is close on this you are wrong. If this were even a SLIGHT possibility the gun and ammo manufacturers would be losing their minds and it would be common knowledge that it is happening. The government knows that doing this would certainly lead to armed insurrection. This is not even a consideration for either party.
So now I am going to get slammed with “Gun Ban” laws and “Gun Control” laws that are going to trample the rights of gun owners across the country. I am going to get “just one new law is too much” and arguments of the like. Bans and regulations are a part of life in a nation built on laws. No one will ever convince someone that their rights are not as important as someone else’s, and therefore you will always get these arguments. There are a million false arguments for both sides, and I have seen the vast majority of them already, don’t need to see them again.
People fought laws regarding alcohol consumption, but they haven’t ruined our society.
People fought laws against driving without a seatbelt, but it’s accepted now for the most part.
People fought laws about the right to vote for women, and blacks. People claimed it would ruin our society and destroy our country.
People fought against abolishing slavery.
People fought about allowing religions of others to be practiced.
No one is coming for your guns. No one is coming for mine, either. Our government is NOT going to change or remove the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution. Instead of simply retweeting or sharing conspiracy theories about government control programs, nazis and everything else, do a little research and try to look at the things that need to ACTUALLY happen before these supposed programs can be put in place. You will find that the only place this is going to happen in America is on a movie set.
